Hey I’m back … join me and start your day off right by tuning into Kathy in the morning! Set your alarm and wake up with me Monday through Saturday from 6-10.
I began my career in radio in 1989 at WAVK Marathon and later transferred to its sister station SUN 103.1 WFKZ Tavernier.
I attended and graduated from Barry University, North Miami Shores, Florida not once but twice! I hold a degree in Communication Arts and a Teaching Certificate. I am also a certified International Learning Styles Specialist awarded from St. John’s University in New York.
Yes, I spent many years in the classroom like you did however, I took it one step further. I never ever thought I’d become an educator but I did!
I was first a substitute and summer school teacher while working at SUN FM. I attended college classes while working which eventually landed me a job as a Middle School teacher. In fact, I learned I was hired by a former principal while on air at SUN 103. I actually had to put her on hold since I was live and needed to announce the weather forecast. Not knowing what to expect on the line and call that awaited me I had butterflies in my stomach as I announced the latest weather report. Of course you know what happened next I was hired!
The first 13 years I spent as a drop out prevention teacher and developed my own program entitled WWKLS Communication. I wrote a grant enabled the school to purchase radio equipment created a closed circuit radio station used by my students exclusively that broadcasted throughout the school. In 1994, we were featured front page of a local section from the Miami Herald. This soon led to a visit from the late Bob Vito from CNN as he featured my class and exclusive program which aired on numerous stations throughout the state of Florida and in the United States.
While on this trek, I was blessed with three wonderful sons, Timothy, Matthew and Patrick. It was awesome being a teacher when they were in school since we all shared the same schedule! Allowing us time for great vacations, the ability to be involved in coaching sports they participated in throughout their younger years. Speaking of sports I love being on the water and love playing! I’m a lover of land sports and yes even sky diving I even once jumped with Golden Knight Army team!
Later, a Video Production teaching position became available and I accepted after the interview. It was a great ride….. But I always wanted to get back into radio!
I later was expanded as an educator with changing times as they focus on test scores taking the creativity out of teaching and no longer taught Video Productions full time. Juggling as most teachers, I was now not only a Video Productions teacher for the school, I also became the school’s Yearbook Advisor (loved it soooo much), AVID teacher/tutor and World History teacher.
Now that my sons are men and graduates, living a life of their own creating their path, I knew it was time for me to move forward to live the dream of being back on the air and I’m loving it communicating with the community you!!!!
